Exegesis begins with the Greek preposition ek, which has the basic meaning of "out of," or "from." Exegesis is the process of getting the meaning of a text out of it. This is built upon understanding the language, social, cultural, historical, and literary context of a specific text, e.g., Romans 5:1-11.
Hermeneutics comes from the Greek word ἑρμηνεύω, hermeneuo, which means to interpret or explain. It refers to the principles that guide the exegesis process, e.g., do not try to interpret a text outside of its original context. These might also be called principles of interpretation.
This guide provides resources for performing exegesis and learning about hermeneutics. Be aware that various authors use these terms in slightly different ways.
