e-Books: Getting Started

A guide to finding and accessing e-Books at Gateway Seminary Library.

Welcome!

In addition to an extensive print collection, Gateway Seminary provides all current students, staff, and faculty access to thousands of online resources-- including e-books and journal articles. Gateway Seminary also has access to a vast, cooperative library network that shares print resources.

What if the Library doesn't have the eBook I want?

Access the library catalog...

  • At any Gateway Seminary campus by logging in to the campus WiFi network or using a Library workstation.
  • Off campus by connecting to the local network and logging into your library account. (Limited to current students, staff, and faculty).

Access is easy, once you've set up your Gateway Library account by following the steps below.

Set up your Gateway Library account

If you want to access the library catalog from home, check out a book, place a hold on a book, renew materials online, make inter library loan requests, access e-books, and more, you must set up a library account.

Take a look at this video about creating and logging in to your library account

If you do not have a Gateway Library account:

E-mail Circulation@gs.edu and include the following information:

  1. Your full name
  2. Your mailing address
  3. Your phone number
  4. Your Institutional ID number

We will create a library account and notify you when it is ready to use. Then you will follow the password set-up steps below.

When you have a library account:

  1. Click the link for "My Library Account" at the top of the Library home page.
  2. Enter your Institutional ID number
  3. Click the link to set/reset your password.

You will receive an e-mail that gives you instructions on how to set up your password.

Download Adobe Digital Editions

If you want to be able to read e-books offline on multiple devices, we recommend using Adobe Digital Editions.

  1. Create an Adobe ID account
  2. Install Adobe Digital Editions (available for PC, MAC, Apple, and Android)

eBook Purchases

Gateway Seminary Library seriously considers all patron suggestions for eBooks the library does not currently own. If you would like to suggest books (print or digital) for the Library to consider, please e-mail the Acquisitions librarian: ChristianaLiem@gs.edu

It is our intention to fulfill as many requests as possible, however not all requests will be able to be fulfilled.

Some reasons an eBook request may be rejected:

  • The book doesn't exist as an eBook: Surprising, but true!
  • The vendor has placed an "embargo" on the eBook in libraries, meaning libraries cannot purchase the eBook until a certain time has passed.
  • The book doesn't fit within the library collection: For example, an auto repair book is unlikely to be part of a student or professor's seminary research and might not be purchased.
  • Purchasing the eBook is simply too expensive and will not receive enough use to justify the cost: Because of how library lending works, an eBook that costs $10 on Amazon may cost a Library hundreds of dollars and come with heavy use restrictions imposed by the vendor. The library might not purchase an expensive eBook that is unlikely to see a lot of use.

If the Library cannot fulfill your request, we will endeavor to meet it another way, such as borrowing the print copy from another library through an Interlibrary loan.
