What do the writers of the New Testament say about the work of the Holy Spirit, and how can we understand spiritual gifts for today? Turner looks carefully at the gospels of Luke and John and the writings of Paul and explores how they took over and developed Old Testament and intertestamental notions of the Spirit. Then he asks how looking at ancient witnesses informs our contemporary understanding.

While not endorsing what they consider to be the excesses of Pentecostalism, the charismatic movement, and the Third Wave, Sawyer and Wallace have embraced what they have tentatively called pneumatic Christianity. They contend that the way much of evangelical cessationism has developed is reactionary and reductionistic. Rather than focus upon scriptural images of the Holy Spirit as a presence deep within the soul of the believer, many cessationists have reactively denied experience in opposition to the Pentecostal overemphasis upon experience, which at times supplanted the revealed truth of scripture.

This study critically examines the central premises of a modern expression of cessationism, Benjamin B. Warfield's Counterfeit Miracles, which is representative and authoritative for conservative Evangelicals. The thesis of this dissertation is that Warfield's polemic--the culmination of a historically evolving argument directed against certain threats to institutional religion--fails because of internal inconsistencies with respect to its concept of miracle, its historical method and its biblical hermeneutics. The central failure of Warfield's cessationism is its confusion of the object of revelation, the finality of Christ and essential Christian doctrine, with the means of revelation, the charismata, including prophecy and miracles. The purpose of this study is that a radically biblical understanding of charismatic function may defuse the conflict over cessationism.

This book concludes that the authors of the Westminster Confession believed that God still directed people in all of life, but that immediate revelation which came from God had ceased now that the church had the completed Scriptures. They affirmed that nothing can be added to the completed Scriptures that alters the doctrines of the New Testament and no further revelation would be given to show the way of salvation other than what God intended to impart through His Son which is fully contained in Scripture, for all of life and for all history. However, they contended that another form of "mediate" revelation continues, i.e. revelation mediated by the Scriptures, not merely for a greater grammatical of contextual understanding of the Word, but as an application of the already revealed Word of God to the life of an individual, church, or nation.
